Catherine Breer grew up in Seoul, Korea, the daughter of Methodist missionaries. She attended Seoul Foreign School for 11 years and returned to the United States in 1982, earning her B.A. in Art History from Emory University in 1986. While at Emory, she studied painting at the Atlanta College of Art. Upon graduation, she moved to Boston and studied painting and illustration at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

Since 1988 she has worked as a graphic designer. In early 2005, she co-founded annie|catherine, inc., with Annie Darling, which sells greeting cards and calendars across the United States and Canada. Her work can be seen at Maine Cottage Furniture, Yarmouth; Couleur Collection, Falmouth; and Molly Hutchins Designs, Boothbay.
