A new fine art gallery—the wonderful gallery / FINE ART -- opened June 12th in the heart of Freeport, energizing the local art community and adding a new dimension to this famed shopping haven.
Located in a carefully restored 200?year old house at 152 Main Street, the gallery is directly across the street from Thomas Moser Cabinetmakers and just steps from the beautiful Harraseeket Inn.
the wonderful gallery / FINE ART features the work of more than a dozen artists, most of whom are native Mainers. More than 70 works of art are currently on exhibit, including paintings, drawings, photography, hand-crafted wooden signs, painted furniture, handmade lampshades, and batik silk wall hangings.
The gallery's debut solo exhibition features the colorful acrylic paintings of Maine coastal scenes by Catherine Breer, who works out of her Freeport studio. Among the other Maine artists represented by the wonderful gallery / FINE ART are Janice L. Moore, Dagmar Becker, Paul Pedulla, Bruce Shields, Ted Smith and Doug Wood. Also represented are New York City photographer Diane Smook, Boston painter Maureen O'Connor, and noted pastel and oil painter Michael Costello, who will be the focus of a six-week solo exhibit beginning July 18. Maine's beautiful coast and woodlands are a theme throughout Costello's work.
Gallery owners Mitchell and Andrea Rouda, recent transplants from Washington DC, are delighted to have found such a beautiful venue for exhibiting and viewing art. "It's much more than a typical art gallery," said curator Andrea Rouda, an artist in her own right, with several paintings and beaded objects on display. "With five rooms, and three more upstairs slated to open next spring, it has the feel of a small museum," she said.
